To all of our Mother's, we say thank you

This weekend sees the world celebrate one of the most important days of the year –Mother’s Day.  While such an occasion will have to be celebrated a little differently this year due to COVID-19, there are still so many special ways to celebrate all of what makes the incredible Mothers and women in our lives so special.

Shelby

Q: What you love the most about her and your relationship with her?

A: My favourite thing about our relationship is our honesty. My sister and I both have a very open relationship with our Mum and can always rely on her and each other to always be honest. I love everything about her but especially how comforting she is and how much she misses me if we go a few days without talking. She is also one of the most positive people I know. Sometimes I do not appreciate this trait very much, like when she won’t just let me wallow in my own self-pity, but she always knows how to make a bad situation better.

Q: How you’ll be spending Mother’s Day this year in comparison to “normal”

A: Instead of our annual Mother’s Day brunch/lunch, my sister and I will be spoiling Mum with an at-home ISO activity to do, a few bottles of red wine (her favourite) and yummy foods. Stay tuned.

Q: In what ways are you similar/different to your Mum?

A: She definitely passed on her love of red wine to me…. but I do hope I am everything like my Mum especially when I am a Mum.

Q:
The best memory of your Mum growing up? What you love the most about her and your relationship with her.

A: I suppose like a lot of people, my relationship with my mum has changed a lot over the years, evolving from being a parent to being a friend. I love that no matter where I am or how far I am from home, I can always make the trip back and she will have the gin waiting! It’s very hard to pick just one memory that stands out, because she has had her fair share of both laughable and teachable moments. The best moments were probably a collection of her trips to Sydney to bust us out of boarding school for the day and treat us, or when she would travel all the way to watch our sports teams lose miserably. Despite our lack of sporting prowess, Mum has always been our number one fan.

Q:How you’ll be spending Mother’s Day this year in comparison to “normal”

A:
Mum has always loved a very lowkey, low fuss Mother’s Day, and this year will likely be no different. Despite her dislike of being the centre of attention, we still like to spoil her appropriately, as all Mother’s deserve.        The way we treat mum has changed over the years, and I secretly think she really does miss our finger-painted cards from primary school, so perhaps social isolation is the perfect time to pull out the paints! Without giving too much away, this year the family are putting their skills to work – Dad in the kitchen and Ana and I mixing the drinks. At the request of the lady of the hour, the day will start with her two favourite things – French toast and a French 75… anyone else notice the Parisian theme?

Q: In what ways are you similar/different to your Mum?

A:
Well, the obvious one is that we are both avid gin fans, probably the main reason she is proud of me. I like to think that the example my mum has set has rubbed off on me, at least a little bit. Watching the way, she genuinely cares for others and offers her kindness to everyone she meets inspires me and is something I try to emanate. In terms of differences, I really wish I had her ability to talk all day every day but unfortunately, it appears this is not genetic.

Q:
The best memory of your Mum growing up? What you love the most about her and your relationship with her.

A: I’ve always been lucky enough to be really close to my Mum, she’s always been the one person in my life that I couldn’t imagine not having around. She’s the type of person that makes you or anyone around her – even a stranger waiting in a line – smile. One of my favourite memories I have with my Mum would be when she would take us all out for coffee and we would sit and laugh for hours, in fact we love it even more nowadays. I love so many things about my beautiful Mum, the fact she puts others before herself, her ability to help anyone whenever and wherever, try so hard to make us laugh (even if that does involve her uncoordinated dance moves) but what I think I love most about my Mum is that she is my best friend and the most compassionate, inspiring and kindest person I know.

Q: How you’ll be spending Mother’s Day this year in comparison to “normal”?

A: Whilst we won’t be spending the day eating out in the vineyards as normal, my family and I will be having a big family brunch to make up for it and treating mum to one of her Favourite Cafes’ ‘Enzo’ takeaway coffees (Never thought we would be so excited for takeaway) – ah the things that isolations makes you do.

Q: In what ways are you similar/different to your Mum?

A: There is no doubt my sisters would say I try very hard to be a ‘mini’ version of my Mum, but I think I have been lucky to have the same sort of love for people and of course her love of shopping. My mum has this ability to see the best in every situation and constantly helps my sisters and I do the same, this is definitely something I hope to reflect in my life. __________________________________________________________________________________
