Moving Day
By Isabella Kidd
Moving day might seem like a daunting experience, although it doesn’t always have to be. Whether you are making a tree change, downsizing, or changing states, you can make the move stress-free if you follow our simple tips.
Do we need to keep this? Once our homes are placed on the market or sold, we start to notice just how many belongings we own. Before placing every item in a box to be moved, do a stocktake of everything in the home. Labelling boxes with keep, sell, or donate will assist you greatly when it comes time to moving day. If you still have items in boxes from a previous move now might be the time you finally donate the items.
Host a garage sale:
Ultimately there will be items that you don’t want to take to your new home. Holding a garage sale is a great way to sell the items that won’t make the removalist truck. It is best to host a garage sale a few weeks before moving – whatever you haven’t sold can either be sold online or donated.
To book a removalist or not?
If you are planning a move interstate or must move a lot of furniture, hiring a removalist service is often the best option. Ensure you check online reviews and ensure that the removalists are qualified and insured. If a removalist service is out of budget – rope in your family and friends, we are sure they would love to help!
Label everything!
Labels will become your best friend during the packing process and will ultimately make your life easier when you are unpacking at your next home. Labelling each box clearly with what room it came from is the best way to ensure your belongings will not get mixed up.
Pay outstanding bills and disconnect and connect your utilities:
So, no nasty surprises pop up at moving time, take care of any bills that may be outstanding. While you are paying bills, if you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to disconnect your utilities. You can request to have your utilities disconnected and connected at your new address on a set date. This will allow you to set and forget and take the stress out of the process of worrying about if you remembered to connect the electricity to your new home.
Home and Contents Insurance:
Home and content insurance is a defence precaution that safeguards your furniture and belongings if the worst should happen. Ensure that your provider also covers your belongings during your move in case an item goes missing or is broken.
Change of address:
How often do we receive mail or deliveries that are addressed to a previous homeowner. If you haven’t already be sure to change the addresses to any subscriptions, saved parcel delivery addresses and make sure that the forwarding address of each member of your family is organised with your local post office. Other address changes that a lot of people forget about is their driver’s license, electoral office enrolment, bank, and insurance companies.
One final task to complete on your move out task list is to clean the home. Once you have removed of your belongings there will be areas that may need some extra love and attention. A thorough clean or quick repair work might be required.
We understand that moving can be an intense time for many. You can simplify the process by setting a plan and ticking tasks off, so you aren’t left with a huge list to complete on the day you move.
